Shortenin' Bread

from Early Architecture by Wetdryvac's Lair

/

about

Traditional field song, adapted by all manner of people - this is the variant around when I was growing up.

lyrics

Bits and pieces of the lyrics go like this, but everyone seems to have their own variants:

Fotch dat dough fum the kitchin-shed—
Rake de coals out hot an' red—
Putt on de oven an' putt on de led,—
Mammy's gwineter cook som short'nin' bread.

The above from Wikipedia, actually - you'll hear that my variant is somewhat differently accented and worded.
